Moving Tips

A well-organised plan is essential for a smooth moving experience and having a strategy in place makes moving much less stressful. There are a lot of things to consider while making relocation plans, and it’s easy to forget something important. It is therefore wise to begin planning your move well in advance to ensure that you have time to arrange all the necessary details.

Preparation is key to making sure that all of the necessary items are taken care of, from packing supplies and booking movers to ensuring your utilities are disconnected at your old home and connected at your new one. In addition, having a plan allows you to keep track of the costs associated with your move and make sure that you are staying within budget.

Here are some moving tips to help you plan your move and pack efficiently:

Planning Your Move

Contact us about a month before your anticipated move date for a quote so that we can plan your move with you. Don’t forget to discuss parking and access for both your old and new properties.

Decide what you want to take. When conducting your survey, you should talk about any items that might need specialised care, such as fine art, antiques, plants, or wine collections.

Make arrangements with your gas and electricity companies well in advance because your mover is not permitted to tamper with mains services. This also includes light fittings.

Run your freezer down. Although every precaution is taken, your mover is not liable for any content deterioration.

Try to make arrangements for a friend or neighbour to watch over young children and pets while the move is taking place. Older kids will love the adventure of moving, so do involve them as much as you can.

If you have agreed to these services, your mover will remove curtains and lift carpets. They will, however, not fit them in your new home.

Provide your mover with a map or detailed directions to your new home.

Take out insurance on your move  to protect yourself from any possible damages or losses.

If you choose Luxfords, we will gladly provide you with a comprehensive moving checklist as well as additional information on how to best prepare for your move.

Packing Guidelines

Packing your house is a daunting task, and it can be easy to overlook items that need protection during the move. Luxfords understands the importance of preparing for a move, so we have put together a list of packing tips to help you get started:

Secure the bottom of the cartons with at least four strips of adhesive tape, which we will supply to you.

Create a bottom cushion by placing loosely crumpled newspaper or packing paper inside the base of the carton.

All breakable, fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap or paper. This shields not only the objects from harm but also other objects. Additionally, wrapping items securely in a box makes them fit snugly and stops them from shifting. For most items, use packing paper; for particularly fragile items, use tissue paper or bubble wrap.

Pack heavy and bulky items first, then add lighter items to fill in any empty spaces.

Lift the carton occasionally to check the weight. Wherever possible, the box shouldn’t be too heavy for one person to comfortably lift.

white item icon 6 01

Fill any empty spaces in the carton with small items or crumpled paper, leaving no gaps. This will help it to be crush proof.

Make a top cushion by leaving a 14 to 12 inch gap at the top of the carton. Fill in the blanks with crumpled paper. When closed, the carton top or sides should not bulge or sag, allowing us to stack them one on top of the other.

Label cartons clearly, including your name (if storage is required), the room in your new home to which the carton should be assigned, and a general description of the contents. Only write “fragile” if the items are truly fragile.

Long-handled tools must be wrapped in adhesive tape. The Foreman will ensure that the bundles are properly padded within the vehicle to avoid damage to other items.

A carton can be flattened after being empty by slicing the tape with a knife. Please keep the empty containers in a dry location, and after you contact our office, we’ll set up a pickup as soon as we can.

Packing is one of the most stressful aspects of moving. When deciding how to pack for a move, a good strategy is to gather your moving supplies first and then go room by room until the job is finished.
